What parts of your home could be affected by storm damage?

Snowstorms are not the only type of storm that can leave something behind. Summer and fall storms can bring strong winds, pounding rain and hail. These elements can damage your home. Here are some of the places in your home where warm weather storms may leave their mark. And, here’s what to do about it.

What could be damaged

  • Shingles. Storms can cause roofing shingles to fall off, get impacted or lose granules. After enough wind, rain and hail. you may even find holes.
  • Siding. Your siding could be dented, cracked or pulled away.
  • Soffit and fascia. Soffit (the boards hidden underneath the protruding section of your roof) and fascia (the long narrow board under your roof that is easily visible from the outside) can also be harmed in a storm.
  • Gutters. Your rain gutters may get dented – sections may even have disappeared.
  • Windows. During a storm, your windows may suffer cracks, or worse.

What to do after a strong storm

If a powerful storm has struck your neighborhood, it’s smart to ask an experienced professional to check your home for damage. The effects of a storm may not be visible right away, but they can still cause lasting issues. Your home should be thoroughly checked, so you can fix any problems before they get worse.

The next question is, who should you ask to inspect your home? Look for a trusted company with an established history in your area. Watch out for “storm chasers” who drive in from out of town. Storm chasers may appear on your doorstep after a storm strikes, but they may not be so easy to find if you have issues in the future.

Looking for long-lasting home siding? Here’s an option to consider

When you replace your home siding, you need to decide what’s most important to you. Is strength your top priority for siding? Or are you looking for a certain appearance? Or lower initial cost? If durability is a high priority for you, you may want to consider steel siding. Steel siding can last a remarkably long time. Minnesota Exteriors carries steel siding from EDCO and Rollex, two respected brands.

EDCO
EDCO was founded in Hopkins, Minnesota, after World War II. Its steel siding comes in lovely hues that stay beautiful. You won’t need to worry about providing much maintenance or painting EDCO steel siding. It comes with a wood-like texture. You can select horizontal siding or a vertical pattern. And, you can choose between rich neutral colors or brighter tones. The company keeps a careful eye on the environment as it creates its products.

Rollex
Rollex has been producing innovative home products since the mid-twentieth century. The company manufactures its own products in Illinois. Rollex takes care to consider the environment. Rollex steel siding is easy to care for, and it holds up against fading. This siding is available with a wood appearance. You can choose Rollex siding in neutral or more vivid colors.

Fast facts about the state fair – including a $7,000 giveaway!

The state fair is a major event in Minnesota. Some people even go twice a year. There’s definitely plenty to do – and win. Here are some facts from the state fair website you may not know about the fair.

  • The Minnesota State Fair first took place in 1859.
  • Before the fair found its current home, it was held in towns including Red Wing, Owatonna and Rochester – as well as St. Paul and Minneapolis.
  • The state fair was not held in 1861, 1862, 1893, 1945 or 1946. The reason it was not held in 1946 was because of polio.
  • This year’s new foods at the fair include:
    • Bowl O’ Dough (cookie dough that comes in a choice of four varieties)
    • Cherry Bombs (battered and deep-fried red licorice)
    • Deep-Fried Avocados (also battered and deep-fried); and
    • Memphis Totchos (tater tots with bananas, bacon and peanut sauce).
  • New things to do or see at the fair include the Great Minnesota Knit Together … and on August 27, there’s a “Dress a Sheep” contest.

And some other news? This year you can win $7,000 to spend on home exterior products at Minnesota Exteriors. Each year, we increase the giveaway to reflect our anniversary. Last year was our sixty-ninth year in business, so the prize was $6,900 to spend with us. This year is our 70th year in business … so you could win $7,000. You could spend the prize on windows, siding, gutters or doors. You could even put it towards roofing. It’s your choice. It’s our opportunity to thank the community for so many years of business!

Come see us at the fair and get entered in the giveaway. Our booth is across from the big slide. So eat some treats, ride some rides, and come visit us. This could be the year you win thousands of dollars to make home improvements. We wish you lots of fun memories at the fair!

1. LP SmartSide
LP SmartSide is engineered wood siding. This brand is built to hold up against harsh weather, termites and impacts. LP SmartSide is available with the texture of cedar – or sometimes with a smooth appearance. Among other advantages, it doesn’t have the knots you may see in traditional wood siding.

2. ProVia

Why is storm damage repair so important?

A storm can cause damage to your home – damage that can be either easy to see or barely noticeable at first. Whether this damage is immediately visible or not, it’s wise to check into it. Why is it so important to find and fix storm damage? Here are seven issues storm damage can cause.

  1. Cracked or lost shingles. Storms can cause shingles to lose their granules. Storms can also cause shingles to break.
  2. Leaks and holes. When shingles can no longer do their job, water may be able to enter your home more easily. This water may cause …
  3. Wall discoloration. You want to remember this summer from photographs and stories, not from marks on your walls.
  4. Water buildup. Water is beautiful at the lake. Not in your basement.
  5. Rot and mold. These issues are definitely not pleasant – or very safe.
  6. Gutter damage. After a strong storm, even your gutters may be impacted.
  7. Structural damage. When water finds its way into your home, it can affect your roof and safety.

Rather than wonder if a storm has caused damage, it’s smart to have a professional check your home. You’ll feel more secure knowing an experienced pro has taken a look at your roof, siding and windows. You want to correct any issues before they get worse.

When choosing a home exterior professional, it’s smart to choose a local contractor with an established reputation. Check contractors’ ratings on the Better Business Bureau website. Ask to see their proof of insurance, and contractor’s license. You want to make sure your contractor is qualified and skilled.

Minnesota Exteriors has served Minnesota for 70 years. We have an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau website, and you can feel confident asking us to check your home. Customer references are available on our website. We’re committed to providing quality service you can recommend to your friends and family. Give us a call and schedule a free storm damage inspection. We’ll help you keep your home beautiful and well-maintained.

Six questions to consider when choosing home windows

When you’re choosing new home windows, you’ll encounter a variety of materials and styles. To help you make a good long-term decision, it’s smart to specify what you’re really seeking. Here are six questions to ask yourself when shopping for new windows. Understanding your needs will help you find the options that are the best fit for you.

You’ll want to decide …

  1. How important is energy efficiency to you? If conserving energy is a high priority on your list, consider features such as LowE glass, double panes and a layer of Argon gas between panes.
  2. What kind of maintenance do you want to provide? If you’re willing to spend more time on maintenance, take a look at beautiful wood frames. If you’re looking for more low-maintenance window frames, consider vinyl or fiberglass.
  3. How strong does the frame need to be? If you need an especially strong window frame, such as for a large picture window, you may want to consider fiberglass.
  4. How much money do you want to spend? If you are looking to keep your initial costs down, vinyl windows may be a smart option.
  5. What suits the look of your home? Choosing frames that complement the rest of your home can make your residence even more beautiful.
  6. How will you want to open the window? Are you looking for a window style that slides open, or would you prefer to turn a crank to open it? Do you want to be able to open the window on both the top and bottom, or just one side? Or does it even need to open at all?

When you’re shopping for windows, you deserve many choices. That’s why at Minnesota Exteriors, we believe in the Power of Choice. In our spacious showroom, you can choose from multiple brands. We’ll help you evaluate your options in a friendly, no-pressure atmosphere. Stop in to see us, request a free estimate or give us a call. We’re happy to help you choose home windows that suit your needs.

Ready for roof replacement? Two brands you should know

When it’s time to replace your roof, it’s smart to evaluate multiple options for roofing shingles. You deserve the color, material and value that best fit your needs. As you look into your options, here are two quality brands to look for.

IKO

IKO began in Canada, and now also has manufacturing plants in the United States and Europe. This company offers designer, architectural and 3-tab shingles, as well as other helpful roofing products. The company keeps a close watch on the materials it uses to make its products.

GAF

A huge company, GAF’s shingles have won numerous awards. The company places a high value on quality. It has been serving customers for well over a century. GAF offers a comprehensive residential roofing system.

Even your roof needs a style

As you evaluate brands, you’ll also need to choose between styles. You can find roofing shingles in a surprising variety of shapes, colors and features. Asphalt shingles are available that look like slate or wood. Shingles may present a range of colors in one roof, or just one shade.

Wondering what a new style or color would look like on your roof? Try our Home Visualizer. With this free online tool, you can upload a photograph of your home and then see how a different product would look on it. Or, you can use a photo from our gallery and try out new colors and styles on the photo.

You’ve got choices

At Minnesota Exteriors, we believe in the Power of Choice. When you work with us, you’ll have a wide range of brands and styles to choose from. We offer multiple brands for each product we sell. You can browse through many products in our large showroom.

Making home siding repairs? Remember to check these two places

When it’s time for home siding repairs, take a moment to look a little higher. Your soffit and fascia may need attention, too. These two elements help keep your home in good repair. Your home needs them for ventilation, support and protection.

Soffit

“Soffit” refers to the boards hidden underneath the protruding section of your roof. Soffit helps your attic and roof get the ventilation they need. Keeping your soffit in good repair also helps thwart bugs and critters from entering your house.

Fascia

“Fascia” refers to the long narrow board under your roof that is easily visible from the outside. Fascia adds to the visual appeal of your home, and it helps support your gutters. You need your gutters running smoothly so they can carry water away from your walls and roof.

Soffit and fascia play a practical role in your home. They also affect how your home appears. If you notice your gutters leaking, or if your soffit or fascia start to show issues, it’s time to make some repairs.

Choosing a home improvement company

One factor to consider as you choose a home improvement company is, what relationship does a company have with distributors? Minnesota Exteriors owns a distribution company. Through this distribution company, we work directly with manufacturers. This helps us get new kinds of products – and gives us leverage if there are questions.

You’ll also want to look for a home improvement company that can give you a warranty on installation. You’ll feel more secure knowing a company stands behind its work. Minnesota Exteriors offers a Lifetime Workmanship Warranty on installations. We’ve served Minnesota families for 70 years, and providing skilled service is a matter of pride for us.

Keeping your eaves and siding in good repair can make your home more comfortable – and beautiful. Whether you need new soffit and fascia or you have siding damage, let us know how we can help. A trusted Minnesota company, we offer advantages that benefit you.
